Lethal Lemoise Beam, 31, carpenter, died attempting to save Fred P. Bloodworth, Jr., from drowning, Concord, Georgia, June 1, 1969. When Fred, 11, tried to swim to a rock rising above the water in the Flint River, the current carried him into an area of deep water. He attempted to swim against the current to reach the rock but could not do so and called for help as he was carried downstream. Beam, 31, carpenter, ran to the river, removed his boots, and entered the water. He swam 60 feet to Fred, who still was in deep water. Beam took hold of Fred under the chin and towed him 10 feet toward the bank. Both Beam and Fred then sank and did not reappear. Their bodies later were recovered.
