Lewis A. Powers, 52, brakeman, saved Vergil J. Harmon, 14, schoolboy, from being killed by a locomotive, Morehead, Kentucky, April 26, 1930. Vergil jumped from a train and ran on an adjoining track a few feet ahead of a locomotive that was backing at a speed of 10 m.p.h. He was struck by the coupler, and Powers, who was standing on the footboard of the locomotive, clasped him with one arm and tried continuously to lift him from the track, but Vergil’s legs were dragged under the footboard. Powers gradually was pulled down toward the footboard, but he held Vergil while he was dragged 80 feet. The locomotive stopped, and Powers stepped to the track and pulled Vergil, who was under the locomotive to his thigh, off the track.
