Lewis A. Spinner, 10, schoolboy, attempted to save Hiram S. Wilkerson, 8, from drowning, Lockport, New York, January 27, 1911. Lewis, a poor swimmer, walked over thin and soft ice to Hiram, who had broken through the ice on Eighteen Mile Creek where the water was 11 feet deep. When he pulled Hiram out of the hole, both boys broke through. They struggled together, going under the surface, and after Lewis had gotten free, Hiram grabbed his leg. Lewis kicked Hiram loose and tried to grab him by the head, but his cap came off and Hiram sank and was drowned. Lewis held to the ice at the edge of the hole and was rescued by a man. 6320-516
