Lewis Dale Collins rescued Vanessa C. Platt from burning, Lawrenceville, Georgia, March 2, 1990. Miss Platt, 18, was trapped in the passenger seat of a burning car following a highway accident. Hearing the accident from his hearby home, Collins, 46, electrical worker, went to the scene and, despite growing flames, which spread inside the car to its dashboard, opened the passenger door of the car and leaned inside. He attempted to pull Miss Platt from the car but found that her legs were caught in the wreckage. After kicking at the wreckage, Collins again seized Miss Platt, and he pulled her from the car. Miss Platt was hospitalized for treatment of injuries received during the accident, including a third-degree burn to one foot, from which she recovered.
