Lillian C. Francoeur saved Wilfred La Pointe from drowning, Marblehead, Massachusetts, July 22, 1944. A kayak which La Pointe, 46, inspector, was paddling in Salem Harbor swamped and sank in water nine feet deep at a point 50 feet from shore. Throwing aside the paddle, La Pointe, who could not swim and wore hip-length rubber boots that were attached to his belt, was twice submerged. Kicking off her shoes, Mrs. Francoeur, 43, housewife, swam from shore to La Pointe, who grabbed her with both hands. They were submerged and rose three feet apart. Heeding her warning not to grab her again, La Pointe took hold of her dress; and she towed him to wadable water within three feet of shore. La Pointe became unconscious but was revived. 40308-3404
