Lillian E. Shaw, 22, attempted to save Chester M. Barry, 13, from drowning, Clarksville, Tennessee, July 2, 1915. Chester became distressed in the Red River 25 feet from the bank, and Miss Shaw swam to her from a bar 30 feet away. Chester threw her arms around Miss Shaw’s neck, and both bobbed up and down twice. Miss Shaw freed herself but continued her efforts to save Chester until two young men arrived. One of the young men saved Chester, and the other helped Miss Shaw ashore. 17282-1278
