Linda Diana Barker saved John R. Taylor, Jr. from drowning, Cheboygan, Michigan, August 30, 1969. John, 11, and another boy were swimming in Lake Huron when they got into difficulty in water beyond their depth 170 feet from shore and called for help. Linda, 13, schoolgirl, a poor swimmer, was in the area and swam 70 feet to John, who was nearest. When John grasped her about the neck, Linda told him to climb onto her back instead, which he did. After being submerged briefly, Linda realized she could not aid both boys at the same time. She told the other boy she would return for him after taking John to safety. While Linda was towing John to shallow water, the other boy sank and drowned.
