Lloyd A. Osborne, 28, dentist, died attempting to save Claude G. Milligan, 15, student, from drowning, Fremont, Iowa, July 24, 1918. While swimming in the Skunk River, Claude got into an eddy in a hole eight feet deep, became excited, and called for help. Osborne, who could not swim, waded to chest-deep water at the edge of the hole, caught hold of Claude’s hand with one hand, and then either stepped into the hole or was pulled into it by Claude. Claude got at Osborne’s back and got his arms around Osborne’s neck, and they went under the surface two or three times, struggling. Another man waded from the bank and swam 10 feet to them. He took hold of Osborne’s hand, made a stroke or two, and was then grasped and submerged. All three were drowned. 19361-1559
