Lloyd E. Rogers, 19, student, saved Joan M. Johnstone, 13, from drowning, Ventura, California, July 12, 1919. While bathing in Santa Barbara Channel, Joan lost her footing, was carried seaward by a current, and was unable to swim to shore. Having rested after making two or three unsuccessful attempts to get over the breakers, Rogers waded from shore and swam 400 feet on a diagonal course to Joan and swam 450 feet with her to wadable water. He was nearly exhausted. 19734-1590
