Lola E. Haven, 12, schoolgirl, attempted to save Esther Randall, 16, from drowning, Centerville, Missouri, July 25, 1912. Esther, a poor swimmer, became distressed in the Black River 10 feet from the bank, where the water was over six feet deep. Lola swam to her and grasped her, and Esther grabbed Lola at the shoulders and pushed her beneath the surface. Lola got free and came up, but Esther again grabbed her and pushed her down. They struggled together a moment longer, and then a boy swam to them and took them to shallow water. 12740-880
