Lonnie Blow, Jr., saved Majeekah D. Milton from burning, Portsmouth, Virginia, January 26, 1995. Majeekah, 3, was in a bedroom of a one-story house after fire broke out on the bed in that room. In a school across the street, Blow, 35, teacher, was alerted to the fire. He went to the scene and learned from a woman there that Majeekah was still inside the burning house. Blow entered the house through the front door and crawled into the living room, which was filled with smoke that precluded visibility. He followed Majeekah’s cries into the adjoining bedroom and located her by feeling for her. He grasped Majeekah and, placing her over his shoulder, returned to the front door, where he stood and carried her outside to safety. Majeekah was hospitalized for treatment of smoke inhalation. Blow also required hospital treatment for smoke inhalation, and he recovered.
