Lorenie R. Russell died attempting to save Goon Loong from burning, Fowler, California, January 19, 1941. At night while Russell, 30, farmhand, and Loong, 85, farmhand, were in adjoining rooms in a one-story frame building, fire started in Loong’s room. Russell ran to another building nearby and asked a man to aid him in getting Loong out. Telling the man to hurry, he ran to an outside door of Loong’s room, which was open, and entered the room. Flames were rising from the floor to the ceiling near the doorway. The door, which was equipped with a spring, then closed and became locked by means of a peculiar locking arrangement. Russell and Loong called for help. A man tried to push the door open but could not. The roof then fell in, and flames rose 10 to 15 feet above the room. Russell and Loong died in the fire. 38869-3274
