Louis E. Smutz, 21, student, saved Winifred M. Smith, 12, and M. Araleen Cooke, 13, from drowning, Tidioute, Pennsylvania, August 7, 1919. (See case of WILLIAM J. SNYDER.) Winifred and Araleen were the other two small girls in the boat. When it sank, Winifred grasped Arateen and forced her under the surface. Both girls sank together at least twice. Smutz, who had a crippled right forearm, swam 100 feet to them, arriving shortly after William. Smutz took hold of Winifred and Araleen, who held to each other, and supported them with the upper part of his right arm and shoulder and swam 85 feet with them to wadable water. 19848-1672
