Louis J. Wetzel, 24, laboratory assistant, died attempting to save Maye V. Robinette, 18, from drowning, Hunter, Tennessee, June 15, 1930. While wading in the Watauga River, Miss Robinette stepped into water 10 feet deep. After a man who had tried to aid her had been grasped by her and had freed himself, Wetzel swam 40 feet to her and took hold of her. She grabbed him, and Wetzel was repeatedly submerged in a struggle that followed. Dana R. Moody swam to them and forcibly separated them. Miss Robinette grasped Moody, and Wetzel drifted a few yards from them and was drowned. Moody took Miss Robinette to wadable water.
