Louis Joseph Pickens died attempting to save Joseph A. Egrie from drowning, Rochester, New York, July 17, 1924. Joseph, 13. schoolboy, while swimming in Lake Ontario, was carried into water beyond his depth. The water was rough, the waves being three feet high. Pickens, 23, clerk, who was clothed, jumped from a pier and swam 30 feet to Joseph. He took Joseph by the arm and swam back to the pier, but they could get no hold on its smooth side. After a futile effort had been made to lift Joseph on the pier, Pickens and Joseph became separated and were carried away. They drifted near each other. A good swimmer then reached Joseph and took him back to the pier, and he was pulled up. Pickens was drowned. 24433-1968
