Louis L. Diana attempted to save Charles R. Banks, Jr., from drowning, Woodstown, New Jersey, December 26, 1980. Banks, 33, broke through the ice on a lake and floundered in deep water. Diana, 17, siding installer, crawled on his stomach to near the hole, where the ice then gave way under him. The current carried Banks and Diana under the ice to an area of open water. Diana then took hold of the unconscious Banks and, breaking the ice as he swam, towed him toward shore. Reaching safe ice, Diana climbed out, pulled Banks from the water, and began dragging him across the ice. Others met them and aided in taking Banks to shore, but he could not be revived. 57610-6546
