Louis P. Peterson died attempting to save Helen D. Levig from drowning, Granite Falls, Minnesota, May 28, 1921. Helen, 16, was drawn by a companion into deep water in the Minnesota River about 25 feet from the bank, where there was a strong undercurrent. Louis, 17, student, fully clothed, swam from the bank to Helen and took hold of her. Helen took hold of Louis’s arm, and they were submerged several times. They then became separated, and Louis sank and was drowned. A man swam to Helen and took hold of her, and he was aided to the bank by holding to a pole, which was extended to him by a man standing in wadable water. It was then discovered that Helen’s companion was still clinging to her. Both girls were unconscious but recovered. 21921-1780
