Louise A. Corgiat, 15, student, died attempting to save Evelyn C. Cunningham, 14, from drowning, Modesto, California, May 30, 1926. Evelyn, who could not swim, slipped into an irrigation canal, and Louise tried to push her up the sloping bank. The bottom was very slippery, and they moved into deep water. Louise supported Evelyn as they were carried 55 feet in the current, and, after being submerged twice, they became separated. A man then swam to Evelyn, but after a struggle, both sank and were drowned. In the meantime, another man swam to Louise and attempted to get hold of her, but she sank and was drowned, and he swam to the bank. 26298-2095
