Louise B. Smiley, 13, schoolgirl, saved Kathryn Annis, 14, from drowning, Squirrel Island, Maine, August 2, 1916. Kathryn lost confidence in herself while swimming 100 feet from shore in Davenport Cove, where the water was 12 feet deep, and she went under the surface. Louise was swimming about 20 feet from her, and she swam to the point where Kathryn disappeared. Kathryn came up, grasped Louise, and took her under the surface. Louise broke her hold, rose, took hold of Kathryn’s bathing suit, and swam 40 feet with her toward shore. A woman and Kathryn’s father then met them, and a rowboat was brought to them, and they were taken to shore. 18128-1528
