Lowell E. Bair saved Christine, Dixie M., and Fred Abel from suffocation, Smithfield, Utah, December 26, 1970. When fire broke out at night in the furnace room of his home, Abel, 38, truck mechanic, tried to remove his daughters, Christine, 14, and Dixie, 15, from their basement bedroom but was overcome by smoke and heat. The other members of the family escaped. Bair, 41, highway patrol sergeant, was attracted from his home nearby. Learning that Abel had gone to get the two girls, Bair ran to the basement’s outside door and forced it open. He crawled into the basement and, despite dense smoke, located the three persons, who were lying unconscious near the door. Flames continued spreading and heat and smoke increased as Bair, on separate trips, removed Christine, Dixie, and then Abel. All were revived; and they recovered fully after hospitalization.
