Lucien Fontaine, Jr., saved Edward Duquette from drowning, Southbridge, Massachusetts, March 2, 1914. Edward’s brother fell from the edge of the ice into the Cohasse Brook, and Edward, 8, jumped into the water to save him. The water where they were was over five feet deep, and it was flowing under the ice with a current of 7 m.p.h. Edward’s brother was swept under the ice and drowned. A small boy held Edward at the surface at the edge of the ice. Lucien, 15, errand boy, jumped into the brook at a point 40 feet upstream from Edward on account of a building at the edge of the water intervening. He swam to a point near Edward and got up on the ice. He grasped Edward at a moment when the boy who was holding him was about to let go. Edward’s head only was visible at the surface, his body having been pulled under the ice. A man reached Lucien shortly after Lucien grasped Edward, and pulled Edward out of the water. He was nearly unconscious, but he was revived. Lucien caught cold and was disabled five days. 12747-1022
