Lucille Crouch, 24, teacher, helped to save Lillie C. Hunt, 56, from drowning, Port O’Connor, Texas, September 6, 1913. Mrs. Hunt, a poor swimmer, swam 15 feet from a pier in water eight feet deep and was unable to return against the strong current. Miss Crouch swam to her and repeatedly tried to swim with Mrs. Hunt’s hand resting on her shoulder, but she sank each time under Mrs. Hunt’s weight. Both were being carried away by the current, and Mrs. Hunt endeavored to persuade Miss Crouch, who was only a fair swimmer, to leave and save herself, but Miss Crouch steadfastly refused. Miss Crouch’s 14-year-old sister dived from the pier and swam 150 feet to Miss Crouch and Mrs. Hunt. Together the sisters pushed Mrs. Hunt 310 feet across the current, where all three were able to touch bottom. They were nearly exhausted, but all recovered. 11904-1205
