Luis Vega saved Joanne L. Valiante from being struck by a train, Boca Raton, Florida, March 22, 1994. Dazed, Ms. Valiante, 51, was in the driver’s seat of her car after it was pushed by another car onto a railroad track at a crossing. A train was approaching at about 75 m.p.h. Seeing that Ms. Valiante remained in her car, another motorist at the crossing, Vega, 23, chef, immediately ran to its driver’s side. Then at a point between the car and the approaching train, Vega opened the door, grasped Ms. Valiante, and pulled her out. They ran off the track. Although in emergency braking, the train struck Ms. Valiante’s car seconds later, demolishing it, and came to a stop well beyond the point of impact. Ms. Valiante received hospital treatment for injury to her back and neck.
