Luke John Schaaf saved Jama L. and Samuel V. Priscella from drowning, Crystal, Minnesota, January 3, 1993. Ms. Priscella, 37, and her son Samuel, 3, were walking on frozen Middle Twin Lake when Samuel broke through thin ice and Ms. Priscella broke through while going after him. Ms. Priscella supported Samuel and trod water while shouting for help. Schaaf, 19, a college student who lived on the bank of the lake in that vicinity, heard the shouts. He responded to the scene with an eight-foot- length of board and, crouching, moved toward Ms. Priscella and Samuel. About halfway to them, he too fell through the ice. Schaaf broke a path in the ice to Ms. Priscella and Samuel and extended the board to Ms. Priscella, who grasped it. Schaaf pulled Ms. Priscella and Samuel toward him, then helped them out of the water and off the ice. Ms. Priscella and Samuel were treated at the hospital for hypothermia, and they recovered.
