M. Alexander Tooke attempted to save Thomas H. Gallant from suffocation, Minto, New Brunswick, July 28, 1932. After Stackable was rescued, Tooke, 25, mine stationary engineer, being roped and having his nose and mouth covered with gauze saturated with spirits of ammonia, held his breath and descended to the bottom. He tried to lift Gallant, 43, miner, and then slipped the loop around Gallant’s leg. He then took a breath, immediately felt he was being affected, and called to be pulled up. He was conscious of nothing more until he was being pulled over the rim of the shaft. He was dazed and weak and felt sharp pains around his heart. Gallant was raised to the top, but he was dead.
