M. Hugh Kelly saved F. Marion Gaines and Raquel Rodriguez, and died saving M. Betsey Duff from drowning, Hopkinsville, Kentucky, September 14, 1931. While Miss Gaines, 20; Miss Rodriguez, 19; Miss Duff, 18; Kelly, 24, student; Ralph M. Harned, 19, and five other persons were riding in a boat on Lake Morris, the boat swamped, and all were thrown into water 14 feet deep 150 feet from the bank. It was dark. The boat turned over several times as all grabbed at it and then lay bottom up. Kelly swam from the boat to Miss Gaines and holding her, swam five to 10 feet to the boat and placed her upon it. He then swam 10 feet or more to Miss Rodriguez and Miss Duff, who were close together with Harned. Taking hold of Miss Rodriguez, he swam back to the boat. He then got upon the boat, but threshing was heard at the point he had left the other two, and he swam to Miss Duff and towed her about 12 feet to within reach of the boat. She was pulled upon it, but Kelly sank close to the boat and was drowned. Three men in two rowboats arrived and gave assistance, and only one other, Harned, was drowned. 31618-2654
