M. Kathleen Pilkerton died attempting to save Elizabeth A. Bishop from being struck by a train, Crozet, Virginia, November 21, 1993. Using a walker, Ms. Bishop, 81, was crossing a railroad track near the nursing home where she resided when she fell on the track. Ms. Pilkerton, 40, customer service representative who worked also at the home part-time as a receptionist, was alerted and went to the track. As she approached Ms. Bishop, a train, sounding its horn, appeared from around a curve in the track. Extending her arms, Ms. Pilkerton ran into the path of the train toward Ms. Bishop. The train struck and killed both women.
