M. Ross Waldrop, 28, labor subforeman, died helping to save W. Garry, 5, and Ronald L. Waldrop, 3, from drowning, Port Arthur, Texas, May 26, 1952. A motorboat in which Garry, his brother Ronald, and Waldrop were riding went out of control and veered sharply in deep water in a canal, throwing the boys overboard 35 feet from the bank. Waldrop, who had only one arm, jumped from the moving boat fully clothed and swam 20 feet to Garry and Ronald. He swung Garry onto his back and obtaining a hold on Ronald supported the boys for two minutes and then slowly sank. Shortly afterward, Garry and Ronald also submerged. Their father and another man swam from the bank and brought them to the surface. An approaching boat took Garry, Ronald, and the others to the bank. Ronald was semiconscious but was revived. Both boys recovered. The body of Waldrop was recovered two hours later. 3834-42586
