Mabel Fahey Irwin, 22, stenographer, saved Christine Carpenter, 21, from drowning, Camp Walton, Florida, August 19, 1926. Mrs. Carpenter swam 150 feet from a pier in the Santa Rosa Sound and could not swim back on account of a current. Her husband swam to her but was unable to help her, and they drifted farther from the pier. Fully dressed, Mrs. Irwin waded from shore and swam 195 feet to Mrs. Carpenter and took hold of her. About the same time her sister, who had followed her, reached Mrs. Carpenter’s husband. After trying to swim with Mrs. Carpenter and making no progress, Mrs. Irwin supported her a short time until a boat reached them. 26673-2248
