Mae T. Crowell, 25, housewife, saved Robert W. A. Burk, 14, clerk, from drowning, New York, New York, July 8, 1922. Robert lost hold of a plank on which he was swimming in the Hudson River and threshed violently 57 feet from the bank, where the water was 10 feet deep. Mrs. Crowell swam 15 feet to Robert, who clutched her neck, causing both to sink. Under water, Mrs. Crowell freed herself and then rose and took hold of Robert’s arm, but he again grasped her neck, and both sank. With great effort, during which she swallowed water, Mrs. Crowell freed herself, and they came to the surface. Encircling Robert’s arms and body with one arm, Mrs. Crowell swam with him five or 10 feet toward the bank. Then she was met by several men, who took Robert to the bank. 22597-1907
