Manuel Villalobos, 26 laborer, attempted to save John D. Hayhurst, 32, foreman carpenter, and Floyd A. Jones, 38, laborer, from suffocation, Cincinnati, Ohio, October 28, 1927. Hayhurst and Jones entered a sewer manhole, 21 feet deep, to tie a rope around a man who had been overcome by gas and were afterward overcome themselves. After the man was drawn out, Villalobos entered, carrying a rope and descending to the bottom. He tried to tie the rope around one of the men but became affected by the gas, started to climb out, and fell unconscious. He soon regained consciousness and climbed to the top of the manhole, where he was helped out. He suffered serious effects from the gas and was disabled four weeks. Jones and Hayhurst lost their lives. The man they had descended to save was revived. 28620-2272
