Manville F. Robison attempted to save Myrtle J. Petri from drowning, Taft, Oregon, July 19, 1931. Mrs. Petri, 38, who wore a life preserver suspended loosely from her shoulders, jumped from a capsized fishing boat into the Pacific Ocean at a point 750 feet from shore. She drifted in a current of 3 m.p.h. and in waves eight to 10 feet high. The boat drifted away from her. Robison, 42, restaurant proprietor, waded from shore and then swam 700 feet to Mrs. Petri, took hold of her, and tried to swim toward shore. They were carried farther seaward, and Robison was unable to see shore because of the high waves. After he had been in the cold water a half-hour and was about exhausted, he and Mrs. Petri were rescued by a man in a rowboat. 31452-2643
