Marc Branch rescued Renee Lanteigne from burning, Paquetville, New Brunswick, October 14, 1987. Miss Lanteigne, 16, was trapped inside an overturned and burning car following a highway accident. Branch, 27, electronics technician who lived nearby, was alerted to the accident. He went to the scene and attempted without success to open the driver’s door, then went to the front passenger door, but flames and intense heat drove him back. Branch returned to the driver’s door and, despite growing flames, partially entered the car, grasped Renee, and pulled her out. Branch and another man carried Renee away from the burning car moments before it exploded and was engulfed in flame. Renee was severely burned and required extensive hospitalization. Branch required hospital treatment for second- degree burns to his hands and wrists, and he recovered.
