Margaret A. Frischknecht, 12, schoolgirl, saved Anna Lelak, 4, from drowning, Mountain View, New Jersey, May 1, 1955. Anna fell from a retaining wall into the Pompton River and drifted to deep water 15 feet from the wall. Running 30 feet along the bank, Margaret descended a short flight of steps and jumped fully clothed into the water. She swam 20 feet to Anna, who floated face down in the water and was unconscious, and turned her over onto her back. With difficulty Margaret towed Anna to the foot of the steps and lifted her out of the water. Another girl aided Anna up the steps as Margaret climbed from the water. Anna soon was revived. 43458-4017
