Margaret Elaine Rice, 15, schoolgirl, saved Mariette L. Archer, 17, from drowning, Manson, Washington, November 26, 1945. In a blizzard a bus, in which Miss Rice, Miss Archer and other school children, and Mrs. Glenna Brown were riding, plunged down the bank of Lake Chelan and was submerged 20 feet from the bank in water 30 feet deep. Three boys got free and swam to the bank, Miss Rice got out of the bus through a window, reached the surface, and saw Miss Archer, who was floating helpless. Swimming to the bank and removing her galoshes, shoes, and coat, she swam 26 feet to Miss Archer, took hold of her around the neck, and slowly swam to the bank, which was very steep. Getting footing on a submerged rock, she raised Miss Archer onto a rock. Meanwhile her brother Alan Herbert and her father Alan Randolph arrived; and while her brother aided Mrs. Brown, her father helped to raise Miss Archer higher on the bank. Miss Archer was revived. Fifteen children and the driver of the bus were drowned. 40573-3474
