Margaret N. Vickers, 50, housewife and physician, saved Suzanne M. 2, and Wayne A. Burr, 17 months, from burning, Wanakena, New York, December 18, 1944. While the children were in the living room of their frame home, fire developed in the kitchen. Outside the temperature was 20 degrees below zero, and there was snow three feet deep. Mrs. Vickers ran to the house and through a small hall entered the living room, in which smoke was dense. Stooping low and being guided by Suzanne’s whimpering, she groped her way to Suzanne at the far wall. Gasping for breath and bumping against furniture, she carried Suzanne from the house. Removing her glasses, which were blackened with smoke, Mrs. Vickers re-entered the living room. Again stooping low, she groped her way to Wayne in a far corner. She carried him toward the doorway, knocked over some furniture, and in panic ran out of the house. Wayne, who was unconscious, and Suzanne suffered from smoke poisoning but recovered. Mrs. Vickers collapsed but was revived. Suffering from smoke poisoning and minor burns, she was disabled for two weeks. 40356-3460
