Marianne I. Ward, who helped to save Deborah A. Letourneau from drowning, Old Orchard Beach, Maine, June 8, 1969. Deborah, 13, along with her older sister and a young man, got into difficulty in surf in the Atlantic Ocean when they were unable to swim back to the beach because of a strong seaward current. Miss Ward, 24, registered nurse, swam to them in deep water about 140 feet from shore. By then Deborah was unconscious. Miss Ward towed Deborah to within 80 feet of shore and then, tired from swimming against the current, called for assistance. Another nurse swam to them and aided Miss Ward in taking Deborah about 50 feet farther. A man then relieved them of Deborah; and all reached shore. Others aided the sister and the young man. Deborah recovered.
