Marion F. MacLachlan, 31, housewife, saved Charlotte E. White, 13, and Cynthia W. Conley, 9, from drowning, Salisbury Beach, Massachusetts, August 5, 1946. While wading in the Atlantic Ocean, Charlotte and Cynthia lost their footing and drifted to water 15 feet deep 450 feet from shore. Mrs. MacLachlan waded and then swam in waves three feet high 420 feet to the girls and raised Charlotte, who was slightly submerged. Cynthia grasped Mrs. MacLachlan around the neck, and all were briefly submerged. At Mrs. MacLachlan’s direction Cynthia released her. Mrs. MacLachlan then supported one girl in each arm and swam 200 feet toward shore. A man, who had swum from wadable water, then took Cynthia and swam to shore. Mrs. MacLachlan supported Charlotte and swam 230 feet nearer shore. Then Charlotte’s brother waded to her and took Charlotte ashore. Mrs. MacLachlan was aided to wade to shore, where she collapsed. She recovered. 40776-3495
