Marjorie A. Brown, 14, schoolgirl, died attempting to save Anna V. Gahagan, 16, from drowning, Belfast, Maine, July 26, 1917. Anna swam from shallow water into a deep channel in the Goose River, let down to touch bottom, became excited, swallowed some water, and began struggling. Marjorie waded to neck-deep water and extended a hand to her. Anna grasped her hand, and Marjorie then lost her footing and went into the deep channel. They became separated at once, and Marjorie bobbed up and down several times and then sank and was drowned. A man who arrived in response to cries took Anna, who had become unconscious, to shallow water, and she revived. 18451-1551
