Mark Cheverie helped to save Henry, George R., and Harry H. Hayden from drowning, Souris, Prince Edward Island, October 8, 1907. Captain Henry Hayden, 61, and twins George R. and Harry H., 13, apprentice seamen, were stranded in the schooner “Marcella,” which was wrecked on a pile of rocks in Souris Harbor about 750 feet from shore in water more than 12 feet deep. At night, in a gale, Cheverie, 18, fisherman, and another man put out in an 18-foot dory and rowed 2,700 feet to the schooner. While one man rowed the dory, the other bailed water from it, and it was handled with great difficulty. Waves were breaking with great force over the rocks and the schooner, and it was necessary to approach the wreck three times and take the crew off one at a time. Fifteen minutes after the crew was taken off, the schooner went to pieces. 2691-592
