Mark Rush helped to save Ian MacLean from burning, Victoria, British Columbia, May 18, 1994. MacLean, 44, was semi-conscious in the kitchen of his fifth-floor apartment after fire broke out in the bedroom and filled the apartment with dense smoke. Responding to the scene from another floor, Rush, 32, shipping department head, immediately entered the apartment and, in repeated attempts during which he was forced out by smoke, located MacLean. Another man who had responded to the scene then entered the apartment and went to the kitchen, where he seized MacLean. Rush joined him, and together they dragged MacLean from the apartment. MacLean sustained smoke inhalation and was hospitalized overnight. He recovered. Rush also inhaled smoke, and he too recovered.
