Marque Wiggins helped to save Frank F. Wharton from being struck by a train, Merced, California, May 14, 2000. Wharton, 61, who required the use of a power scooter, was crossing a railroad track at a roadway crossing when the scooter became lodged between the rails of the track as a train approached. Motorists stopped at the crossing included Wiggins, 31, dairy herdsman, who, seeing Wharton’s situation, immediately exited his vehicle and ran to him. As the train bore down on them at undiminished speed, Wiggins and another motorist pulled on the scooter to dislodge it, and they moved Wharton from the track just before the train passed, without slowing.
