Marshall E. Miller, 34, salesman, attempted to save Enid Waite, 22, and saved Jackson James, 36, bookkeeper, from drowning, Butte City, California, June 7, 1918. Miss Waite and James, after wading 90 feet from the bank in the Sacramento River, were unable to get back to the bank on account of a current. James supported Miss Waite while Miller swam about 80 feet to them from wadable water near the bank. Miller took hold of Miss Waite and swam to within 20 feet of the bank with her. Hearing shouts that James was sinking, he then pushed her toward another man who was entering the water and swam 75 feet to James, who was then unconscious under the surface. Miller drew him to the surface and swam with him toward the bank, being forced to let down under the surface at intervals to rest on bottom. When he was within 20 feet of the bank, a pole was extended to him, and he and James were drawn to the bank. Miss Waite was drowned, the other man having left her after a short swim and struggle with her. 20698-1846
