Martin Demyan, 29, laborer, died attempting to save John Bonick, 43, laborer, from suffocation, Corning, New York, July 9, 1910. Bonick had fallen unconscious from gas at the bottom of a gas-producer, which was not in operation. After another man had attempted a rescue and been overcome, Demyan, declaring he must rescue Bonick and indifferent to warnings that he too would be overcome by gas, entered the producer, grasped Bonick, and then fell unconscious. He was dead when gotten out, as were Bonick and the other man. 5384-407
