Martin F. Conley, 37, core maker, saved Andrew J. Lemoine, 37, salesman, and Andrew J. Lemoine, Jr., 8, from drowning, Popham Beach, Maine, July 18, 1926. While Lemoine and his son were wading on a bar in the Atlantic Ocean, they were carried over the edge of the bar toward shore into deep water. Fully clothed, Conley waded 50 feet from shore and swam 150 feet to them. He submerged himself and drew the elder Lemoine to the surface. Andrew, Jr., then grabbed him around the neck and got onto his back. Conley swam with great effort 100 feet toward shore with the two and then was so fatigued that he let go of the father, doubting that he was still alive. He swam 15 feet farther with Andrew, Jr., and touched bottom in water that reached to his neck. After getting breath and with Andrew, Jr., still on his back, he swam to the father and then swam with both to wadable water. Conley was exhausted but recovered. 27280-2304
