Mary B. Lankford, 16, schoolgirl, saved Nancy B. Stark, 10, and B. Thomas Grant, 15, schoolboy, from drowning, Virginia Beach, Virginia, August 3, 1926. While Nancy was being supported by Mary’s father in the Atlantic Ocean, they were carried by a current to a point 175 feet from shore, and Mary’s father collapsed. Grant also was carried out by the current. Mary, who was in wadable water, swam 100 feet through rough water to Nancy and aided her momentarily. She then swam 50 feet with her father but lost him in the waves. Although tired and unnerved, she swam 75 feet to Nancy and 50 feet with her toward shore. Giving Nancy to another swimmer, Mary swam 20 feet to Grant, who was swimming with difficulty, and swam 15 feet with him to wadable water. 26763-2289
