Mary C. Yowell, 66, housekeeper, rescued Hazel L. Hardway, 41, from burning, Fort Smith, Arkansas, September 21, 1949. While tending an elderly woman who was an invalid and almost completely paralyzed, Mrs. Hardway fainted and fell across a gas stove in a bedroom on the first floor of a two-story house. Flames from the stove ignited her robe. The elderly woman, unable to leave her bed, telephoned to Miss Yowell, who was on the second floor. Miss Yowell, who was blind, descended and entered the bedroom. The elderly woman told her that Mrs. Hardway had fallen on the stove and was afire. Groping her way across the room, Miss Yowell took hold of Mrs. Hardway and lifted her from the stove. Miss Yowell partly carried and pushed Mrs. Hardway 20 feet through two rooms to the back porch, where she revived. The lower part of Mrs. Hardway’s robe had burned completely, and flames six inches high rose in places on the upper part of her clothing. Mrs. Hardway was severely burned over her entire body and died five hours later. Miss Yowell was nervous and suffered slight hand bums. 3655-41834
