Mary Crowley saved Joan M. Davis, Anna M. Gilmour, and Joyce O’Meara from drowning, Flagler Beach, Florida, September 15, 1986. Mrs. Davis, 50, and Mrs. Gilmour, 51, were swimming in the Atlantic Ocean when they were caught in a current, against which they could not return to shore. They called for help. On the beach, Mary, 14, high school student, saw that the women needed assistance; she entered the water for them, as did Mrs. O’Meara, 49. Mary swam to Mrs. Davis and helped her return to shore. She then swam to Mrs. Gilmour, put an arm around her, and swam back to shore, pulling her. Mrs. O’Meara, meanwhile, had become fatigued and needed assistance herself. Mary swam to Mrs. O’Meara and took her back to shore. The three women, taken to the hospital for observation, were exhausted, but they fully recovered.
