Mary E. Sears, 14, student, saved E. Faye Farrar, 15, from drowning, Handley, Texas, July 23, 1916. Faye waded from shore in Fosdick’s Lake, stepped into deep water, went under the surface three times, and rose to the surface struggling. Mary, who was swimming farther from shore, swam 30 feet to her, and Faye grasped Mary around the neck with both arms. They went under the surface twice together, and Mary broke Faye’s hold just before they rose to the surface the second time. Mary then grasped Faye’s arm with one hand, swam 25 feet with her to wadable water, and waded with her to shore. Faye was semiconscious but was revived. 16748-1509
