Mary Evelyn Brown, 15, schoolgirl, attempted to rescue Leonard I. Todd, 5, from a homicidal attack, Woodstock, New Brunswick, October 11, 1926. Leonard was snatched from his mother in their home by his father, taken to the street, thrown on the ground, and attacked with a razor. In her home, Mary heard the boy’s mother scream that her child was being murdered, and she grabbed a bucket of earth and ran to the man, who was bending over the boy and obscuring the razor. She struck him three times on the back with the bucket, which fell from her hands at the last blow. She then kicked him in the ribs, and he rolled over on his side. A man then arrived and picked up Leonard. Leonard’s throat had been cut with the razor, and he died soon afterward. His father had also cut his own throat, and he died three weeks later.
